Profile

Personal Biography

With thirty years of experience as a published writer and literary-magazine and book editor, I am a skilled mentor, editor, production manager, and freelance writer.

I am skilled at preparing manuscripts for publication. I have worked as a magazine editor since 1988, having edited Arc Poetry Magazine, Vernissage: The Magazine of the National Gallery of Canada, and The Malahat Review. I also edit or have edited books for Brick Books, Coach House Books, Signature Editions, and Wolsak and Wynn, and privately for writers prior to their successfully placing award-winning manuscripts with publishers. I write cover and catalogue copy and participate in sales conferences. I am skilled at evaluating manuscripts, providing a detailed report, and developing a plan to bring them to publishable form. With twenty years of print-production coordination for books, magazines, and promotional tools, I am available on a freelance basis to see books, magazines, and other printed materials through the production cycle from manuscript to printed copy.

As a mentor, I focus on writers’ strengths, help them see the possibilities in their work and instil confidence. I work one on one on single poems, short stories, memoirs, works of nonfiction, or book-length manuscripts. I have mentored writers at all career stages at the University of New Brunswick, Memorial University, and Saskatoon Library; have taught writing at the University of Victoria and the Banff Centre; and have led manuscript and writing workshops for the New Brunswick Writers Association, Sage Hill Writing Experience, and Tree Reading Series.

The author of eleven books of poems and the editor of two anthologies, I have written articles and book reviews that have appeared in magazines and anthologies across the country. I am available on a freelance basis to research and write articles, including features, profiles, and columns, with a particular interest in contemporary literature, queer topics, and the visual arts.
